Answer engine optimization

In one sentence

Answer engine optimization is the practice of writing and structuring content so an AI answer engine picks it up and cites it, which means competing for a mention inside someone else's answer rather than for a ranking position on a results page.

Not to be confused with generative engine optimization.

Definition

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your content the thing an AI answer engine quotes. Classic search optimization competed for a position in a list of links. AEO competes for a mention inside someone else's answer.

The prize is not a click. It is being one of the handful of sources the assistant read before it replied.

An answer engine retrieves differently from a search index. It usually breaks a question into sub-queries, pulls passages from several sources at once, synthesizes one response out of them, and attributes some portion of it. The unit you are competing with is therefore the passage, not the page. A page can rank perfectly well and still contain nothing an engine wants to lift out of it.

What appears to drive citation

  • Extractability. Passages that answer one specific question on their own, without needing the paragraphs around them.
  • Direct answering. The answer stated near the start, before the elaboration. Writing that saves its conclusion for the end loses to writing that opens with it.
  • Structural clarity. Headings phrased the way people actually ask, one definition pattern held across the site, and markup clean enough to parse without guessing.
  • Corroboration. A claim other credible sources already agree with is the safer one to quote, which quietly works against genuinely novel positions.
  • Freshness and specificity. A claim carrying a date, a source and a number beats a generality that could have been written in any year.

AEO against GEO against classic SEO

  • Classic SEO optimizes a page for a ranking position.
  • AEO optimizes a passage for extraction and citation.
  • Generative engine optimization is often used interchangeably with AEO. GEO sometimes carries the wider meaning: brand presence across generative surfaces rather than citation specifically. The terms are not stable yet, so it is worth saying which one you mean.

The measurement problem

  • There is no ranking to track. Citation comes and goes non-deterministically, shifts with how the question was phrased, and differs from one engine to the next.
  • Practitioners fall back on prompt panels, meaning a fixed set of questions tested repeatedly. It is a reasonable proxy. It is not a stable metric.

Common misconception

That AEO is a separate discipline needing its own content program. In practice the pages picked up most often are the well-structured, authoritative ones good SEO always rewarded. What actually changes is formatting discipline, plus a willingness to answer plainly and immediately instead of building toward a conclusion. AEO is old advice finally being enforced more than it is a new craft.

Why it matters commercially

When a growing share of discovery ends inside an AI answer, absence from those answers becomes a kind of invisibility that ranking work cannot repair. Citation also compounds into brand recognition rather than sessions, so the payoff surfaces in branded search and direct traffic instead of an organic traffic report. Attribution here is genuinely hard, and the honest move is to say so rather than gloss it.

Where AsqVox fits

This glossary is the argument in practice. Clearly defined, sourced, self-contained definition pages are a textbook AEO asset, and that is the strategic reason AsqVox publishes one. Formats like this one get picked up reliably because each page closes a bounded question completely.

Both panels are illustrative. The missing arrow on the right is the point of the diagram: the left half is measurable and the right half is the half nobody has agreed how to measure yet.

Statistics

Every figure carries its source and year. Vendor numbers are labelled as vendor numbers, and where no reliable figure exists this page says so rather than borrowing one.

68.01 percent of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60.45 percent in 2024.

SparkToro with Similarweb data, published June 2026, 2026 - US Google searches specifically, at a point in time. Independent third-party measurement rather than a vendor claim, which makes it the strongest citation available on this page and the demand-side case for AEO in one number. Quote it with the geography and the date attached.

AI Overviews reduce click-through rates by 34 to 58 percent.

34 to 58%industry range

Ahrefs, 2026 - Present it as a range and leave it as one. The effect varies sharply by query type and by position, so either end quoted on its own misleads.

There is no established benchmark for citation rate, share of answer, or AEO return on investment. The metrics are being invented as the practice matures, and no independent body publishes comparable figures.

-no reliable figure

This gap is worth foregrounding rather than burying. Being the source that admits what is not yet measurable is itself a citation-worthy quality.

Any vendor quoting a specific citation-rate uplift is quoting an internal measurement on a specific prompt set, not an industry figure.

-no reliable figure

Say so plainly when you quote one. Ask which prompts, which engines, over what period, and how often the panel was re-run.

llms.txt is an emerging convention for signaling content structure to language models. It is a proposed convention rather than a ratified standard, support across engines is inconsistent, and no reliable figure exists for what implementing it is worth.

-no reliable figure

Describe it accurately as emerging. It is cheap enough to be worth doing and thin enough that nobody should promise a result from it.

Schema markup and structured data are machine-readable signals with long precedent behind them, and remain the closest thing AEO has to a stable technical lever.

-industry range

Established structured-data convention, 2026 - A convention with a decade of precedent behind it, not a measured lever. Nobody publishes a citation-rate figure for structured data. Its value is that it predates answer engines and is unlikely to be withdrawn.

Examples

In practice

A B2B company builds a set of definition pages. Each one answers a single bounded question, opens with a plain-language definition in the first sentence, carries a sourced statistic with a date, gives a concrete example, and sits under a question-shaped heading. The team maintains a fixed panel of forty test prompts and checks monthly which engines cite it. Across two quarters citation presence climbs on definitional prompts and hardly moves on comparative ones, which pushes the content roadmap toward the format that is working.

The everyday version

Someone asks an AI assistant a question about your industry. The assistant answers by pulling from a handful of websites. AEO is the work of being one of those websites. Mostly that means writing clear, well-sourced answers to the questions your customers really ask, and putting the answer in the opening sentence rather than the closing one.

Usage

Who says it

Who uses the term

  • SEO and content practitioners, increasingly as their primary framing rather than a side topic.
  • Founders and marketers building category authority, often interchangeably with GEO.
  • It rarely appears in engineering conversations. Worth knowing before you put the acronym in front of a technical audience who may not recognize it.

Where it turns up

In a strategy document

  • Content strategy documents, search visibility reports and agency proposals, sitting next to zero-click share, AI Overview presence, branded search volume and prompt coverage.

In an agency scope of work

  • It should always be paired with an explicit measurement method. Without one the deliverable is unfalsifiable, which is a problem for whoever is paying for it.

Common misuse

What it gets used for that it should not

  • Presenting AEO as a wholly new discipline requiring a separate content program. Most of it is disciplined execution of fundamentals that already existed.
  • Guaranteeing citation. It is non-deterministic and shifts with phrasing and with engine. Anyone promising it has not looked closely at how it behaves.
  • Treating the AEO and GEO distinction as settled. It is not settled. Say which one you mean.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

Classic SEO optimizes a page for a ranking position. AEO optimizes a passage for extraction and citation inside an AI-generated answer, so the unit of competition is the passage rather than the page. The underlying work overlaps heavily, because crawlable, well-structured, authoritative content wins both. What changes is the formatting discipline and the way you measure the result.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Not settled. The two are often used interchangeably, with generative engine optimization sometimes carrying the wider meaning of brand presence across generative surfaces rather than citation specifically. The terminology is still forming. Define which one you mean before either goes into a strategy document or a scope of work.

How do you measure answer engine optimization?

Honestly, nobody has settled this yet. No benchmark exists for citation rate, share of answer or return on AEO spend, and no independent body publishes figures you could compare yourself against. Practitioners use prompt panels, meaning a fixed set of questions tested repeatedly across engines. It is a reasonable proxy, not a stable metric. Any vendor quoting a specific citation-rate uplift is quoting an internal measurement on their own prompt set.

What kind of content gets cited by AI answer engines?

Self-contained passages that answer one specific question without needing the surrounding context. State the answer near the start rather than building to it, use headings shaped like real questions, and keep claims dated, sourced and concrete. An engine will also reach more readily for a claim other credible sources already agree with, which works quietly against genuinely novel positions.
